city palace Jaipur

The presence of power and resources can create epitomes of strong architecture that represent the culture of the age in which they were built. The mansions thus built, stand strong over time as crowing glories of the royal lives, well-lived. City Palace is one of those finest examples of a royal palace built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, in 1727. Other than being the administrative headquarters for the king, the palace has served as a venue for religious and cultural events, arts, commerce, and industry.

To this date, City Palace continues to be the home of Jaipur royal family descendants. Part of the palace is a museum which houses fascinating items like the world’s largest sterling silver jars.

hawa mahal

Our ascendants were intelligent enough in discerning the important elements required for interior and exterior design of living places. And they were also meticulous to consider the limits of customs. The alluring Hawa Mahal stands as an epitome of this fact. A phenomenal creation by Maharaj Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, this five-story palace was constructed in such a way that breeze could blow and pass in its 953 small windows to keep the palace always cool and airy.

This was a place for the royal ladies to enjoy every day royal processions without being seen by any outsider, as was the custom in those days (the royal ladies used to follow the purdah system in which they would conceal their faces with the cloth for seclusion from the opposite sex).

The palace has been built in the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown as the king was a devotee of the Hindu deity. The curved roofs and pink windows in the five-story exterior appeals like the honeycomb of a beehive. It does not have a front entrance. Inside, there are ramps to reach the upper floors, instead of stairs. One cannot help but reflect upon the customs and traditions that existed at that time along with the amazing architectural skills that shaped the bygone era.
